Learn to test your computer
for a bad CMOS battery.
Your computer's CMOS (Complimentary
Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) is a small, battery-powered chip built into the
motherboard. It stores basic data instrumental to your computer's overall
performance. It primarily stores your computer's internal clock settings, and
allows some of your computer's hardware to communicate with the operating
system. When the CMOS battery goes bad, it can cause some of your hardware to
behave erratically.
Instructions

Power on your computer and
leave it on for 12 to 24 hours. This is the amount of time it takes for the
average CMOS battery to charge.

Click on the "Start"
menu, and go to "Control Panel." Select "Date, Time, Language
and Regional Options" in the Control Panel window. Reset the clock
settings to the current date and time.

Shut down your computer, and
disconnect all cables. Leave the computer off for about an hour.

Power on your computer. Check
the computer's date and time with the current date and time. If they don't
match up, your CMOS battery is dead.
